Isaiah, Jeremiah, and the Art of Miklos Adler.
There are two haftarah readings on Tisha B’Av, one prophecy by Jeremiah and another by Isaiah. Jeremiah’s words are filled with pain and prophecies of gloom. In contrast, Isaiah calls for repentance and promises salvation. We look at the texts, and at art for each of these two readings, giving particular attention to works by the Hungarian-Israeli artist Miklos Adler.
Tisha B’Av is the most tragic day in the Jewish calendar. There are ten haftarot read during the weeks surrounding Tisha B’Av from the books of Jeremiah and Isaiah, chosen to address this significant day. In this series, we discuss the haftarah texts, the prophets’ lives and art of the haftarot.
